The 'Oscillation Overthruster' is a reference to one of the most beloved cult Science Fiction movies of all time, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. The prop for the Overthruster has been replicated by many prop makers, and is often seen at prop parties. The love of this movie extends to many in the media, and Buckaroo Bonzai references abound in popular television shows and other media. It's been all over Star Trek (check page near bottom for geological and engineering props). When it came to deal with the issue of the forbidden technology that would permit Kaye to achieve her goals, it suddenly hit me that this was the perfect opportunity for such a reference. I immediately dumped my original techno-MacGuffin in favor of a nod and a wink to one of my favorite things. I would expect that most of my readers would also be fans of Buckaroo Banzai, and enjoy such a reference as well. I've tried very hard to represent the prop as accurately as I can. It's tough - it's a fairly odd-shaped prop!
